Battery Testing – Senior Engineer / Assistant Manager: Homologation & Certification Focus

Job Purpose

Responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing battery testing, validation, homologation, and certification processes for electric vehicle battery packs, in compliance with Indian and global standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Validation & Certification (Testing)- Ensure battery packs, cells, BMS, and components undergo design validation and pass all mandatory certification tests under Indian (AIS 038 Rev 2, AIS 156, IS 16893, BIS, IS 16046/IEC 62133) and international standards (UN 38.3, IEC 62619, IEC 62133, ISO 12405, UL 2580, SAE J2929).
  • Battery Testing & Troubleshooting- Execute and supervise homologation-specific tests: vibration, thermal cycling/shock, mechanical drop, fire resistance (flammability/crush/thermal runaway), EMC/EMI, external short-circuit, overcharge/over-discharge, over-temperature, cell gas emission, cycle life, and abuse tests in accredited labs.
  • Vehicle-Level Integration Support- Troubleshoot and resolve battery pack issues during vehicle integration and customer trials, ensuring pack meets homologation compliance.
  • Test Setup & Laboratory Management- Develop custom bench test setups as per test schedules; maintain NABL-accredited in-house battery test laboratory per national and international standards.
  • Documentation & Regulatory Compliance- Prepare and manage technical documents, test reports, DVPs, DFMEA, ECN/ECF, part code, and BOM data as required for certification submissions. Coordinate with certification bodies (ARAI, ICAT, BIS) and external accredited labs for submission and approval.
  • Supplier & Cross-Functional Coordination- Facilitate battery homologation/testing activities with suppliers; review and release test reports; ensure purchased components/completed packs meet regulatory compliance.
  • Software Support- Assist with BMS software flashing, debugging, and compliance with diagnostics/testing communication (CAN protocol, HV/LV safety relays).
  • Test Procedure & Data Analysis- Develop and frame standard operating procedures for the entire range of EV battery homologation tests; analyze test results and summarize data for regulatory submissions and certification.
  • Manufacturing Transfer & Customer Interaction-Finalize technical reports for transition from R&D to Manufacturing; interact with customers and other internal functions to ensure compliance and positive test/certification outcomes.

Technical Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of Indian standards: AIS 038 Rev 2, AIS 156, IS 16893, BIS, IS 16046, NABL, CMVR, etc.
  • Proficiency with international standards: UN 38.3, IEC 62619/62133, ISO 12405, UL 2580, SAE J2929.
  • Hands-on experience with battery test equipment, sensor instrumentation, safety procedures, and test lab management.
  • Experience with designing experiments, writing test plans, conducting homologation/certification tests, and generating detailed test reports.
  • Advanced data analysis (Excel, Python, MATLAB) for interpreting test data and optimizing battery pack reliability and longevity.
  • Familiarity with BOM, ECN/ECF documentation, DVP, DFMEA, and QMS/ISO compliance for certification.
  • Understanding of real-world integration, vehicle diagnostics (CAN), and field support during homologation.

Interpersonal & Process Skills

  • Effective at cross-functional teamwork and technical communication.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects, documentation schedules, and test lab resources for timely homologation/certification delivery.
  • Willingness to travel to accredited testing agencies and customer locations, as required for homologation.
  • Strong sense of ownership, responsibility, and commitment to high standards of product quality and compliance.
